CHINA Pair of round porcelain dishes decorated in gold iron-red and grisaille in the center with the van Herzeele family coat of arms in a shield supported by two lions standing on a console, under a wreath on a background of flowers in bianco sopra bianco, spearhead motifs in gold on the fall, the wing decorated in grisaille with peacocks, foliage and cartouches. 18th century, Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1740-1745. D. 38 cm. Provenance : Sotheby Parke Bernet sale, Monaco, May 27, 1980, lot 978 The service was probably made for the Rotterdam merchant Pieter van Herzeele (1702-1783). A plate from this service is illustrated by Dr. J. Kroes, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, The Hague, 2007, p. 301, no. 207. The author reports that "according to family tradition, a dinner service was ordered from the East India Company in Zeeland. When it arrived from China, it was unloaded on the quay opposite the East India House in Middelburg, one of the crates fell off the hoists and consequently the vegetable trays and numerous dishes were broken. Only a number of plates and round dishes remained intact".
