CHINE - Époque Kangxi (1662-1722)

Twelve-leaf Coromandel lacquer screen depicting a scholar in his home receiving tributes from a procession arriving on horseback accompanied by his servants. The "shuai" (ruler's status) flag hangs over the portal, guards wait in the inner courtyard accompanied by deer and cranes, while in the gardens, young women stroll about, tending children and playing music. The border adorned with objects related to scholars and alternating auspicious symbols framed by a frieze of two dragons surrounding a "shou" (longevity) character on each panel and a frieze of archaizing dragons.
