Description

Rare Mbembe drum end carved with a representation of motherhood (Nigeria). This imposing sculpture of a seated mother carrying her child at arm's length comes from one of the two ends of the large Ikoro slotted drums from an Mbembe village on the Cross River village. The other end was usually carved with a figure of an armed warrior holding the severed head of an enemy. The two ends were thus the expression of the clan's vital and warlike forces. In addition to marking the community's special occasions, these large horizontal drums would have served as a means of communication between distant villages. Wood with traces of colored pigments, old accidents and visible missing parts. Height: 106 cm Provenance : Alain Dufour Ramatuelle 1976.
