Maurice BOUVIOLLE (1893-1971) Sheep market scene at Boghari, 1930 Oil on canvas. Signed, located and dated lower right. 64 x 100 cm General bibliography on the artist : E. CAZENAVE, Maurice Bouviolle, peintre, écrivain du M'Zab, 1893-1971, association Abd-el-Tif, 2003. His military service took him to Algeria. The sites and daily life of the Sahel and the South fascinated him. Bouviolle won the competition for the Villa Abd-el-Tif prize in 1921, along with fellow artist Jean Bouchaud. In 1922, Rochegrosse took a liking to Bouviolle and advised him to exhibit one of his paintings, Marché à Ghardaïa, at the Salon des Artistes Français. It was a complete success. He was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique de l'Algérie in 1931. Bouviolle's public success continued, and he exhibited frequently, notably his highly acclaimed Diorama sur les sept villes du M'Zab at the Exposition Coloniale in 1931. Some of his works are kept at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Algiers.
