An enamel plate painted in grisaille on a midnight-blue ground with gold and rose highlights for the skin depicting the Creation of Adam (Gen., 1, 26-30 and 2, 7) after engravings by Bernard Salomon from the Quatrins historiques de la Bible (Lyon, 1553). Wings decorated with oval cartouches featuring figures and birds on a white background, interspersed with foliate scrolls; reverse adorned with a profile bust of an emperor. Limoges, attributed to Pierre Pénicaud, late 16th century Diameter: 19.2 cm Provenance: - Fountaine sale, London, 1884, lots 427 and 428. - Hôtel Drouot sale, Me Ader, December 15, 1937, lot 45. (some restorations, slight wear to the gold). A certificate from Alain Moatti, Paris, dated January 14, 1978 will be given to the buyer.
