Rectangular miniature depicting the presumed portrait of the Duke of Monmouth, framed in engraved and gilded brass and decorated with figures, animals and animated scenes. According to the label on the reverse, this is James Scott, first Duke of Monmouth and first Duke of Buccleuch, illegitimate son of Charles II of England and his mistress Lucy Walter. He was beheaded on July 15, 1685, after the failure of the Monmouth Rebellion to overthrow the throne.
