Fine tapestry panel from the Manufacture des Gobelins known as "portière", mid 18th century, Paris circa 1750/1760. Upholsterer: Neilson, Jacques (London 1714 - Paris 1788) Louis XV period. Bacchus, hanging from the Portières des Dieux series. Dimensions : 250 cm x 200 cm Silk and wool. Low-gloss tapestry. Natural wear and oxidation, tears. Remarkably fresh colors. Beautiful polychromy. Description: Dionysus, god of the vine, wine, celebration and excess. Carton after Claude III Audran (b. Lyon, August 25, 1658; d. Paris, May 27, 1734), French mural painter. In 1700-1710, Claude Audran was involved in decorating the Menagerie at Versailles, as well as the châteaux of Fontainebleau, Anet, Meudon, Les Invalides and Les Gobelins. Audran is close to the great and the good of the kingdom. Monseigneur, the son of Louis XIV, appreciated him greatly, even going so far as to commission him to decorate all the ceilings of his Grand Appartement, located on the second floor of the Château Vieux de Meudon.
