Description

MAHOGANY BIDET RESTING ON FOUR LEGS two of which are sabre-shaped at the back and two are cane-shaped and filleted at the front. The scrolled back features a carved floral vase on the entablature and fluting on the uprights. The front of the seat is richly carved with a trophy comprising a quiver, bow, torch, olive wreath and ribbon. A torso ribbon is carved around the seat. A small trapdoor reveals a storage space at the foot of the backrest. The seat is closed by a leather-covered board. Numerous ink marks are visible under the seat and lid. There is also a trace of a label. The provenance of this bidet is multiple: probably a royal commission or for the Garde Meuble, we first find it at the Château de Rambouillet in 1817, then at the Château de Fontainebleau until at least 1849.
