CHINE - Fin Dynastie MING (1368 - 1644) / Début Dynastie QING, XVIIe siècle
Rectangular coffee table in polychrome lacquer called "xipi" (rhinoceros skin), the sides openwork of volutes, the feet forming scrolls. (Shocks and marks on the tray) Dim. 27,5 x 85,5 x 57,5 cm This technique consists of using different colors of lacquer on an irregular background which is then polished to obtain a marbled surface of different colors in imitation of a rhinoceros skin. Scholars' objects (brushes, brush holders, trays, bowls) were decorated with this technique which was in vogue in the late Ming and early Qing periods (17th/18th century).
