Wolf, Elisabeth

Berlin street view in winter, 1934 Oil on hard fiber Signed lower left 61,5 x 46,5 cm framed, original frame Elisabeth Wolf, a student of Lovis Corinth, is considered one of East Germany's most important artists of the interwar period, whose most important works were created in the 1920s and 1930s, although a studio fire in 1945 destroyed much of this body of work. The present work from 1934 shows an atmospheric beautiful city veduta of Berlin in the snow. The painter contrasts the expressively heightened blue and white snow with yellow iridescent areas of color and some red accents, which gives the entire painting a color dynamic. The skilfully placed shadow of the church in the foreground gives a strong spatial effect, which extends to the impressionistic background. Undoubtedly a major work of the artist.
