Rieger, August

Park landscape Gouache on paper Signed lower left 31 x 37 cm framed, profiled frame August Rieger (* 1886 in Vienna; 1941 ibid) was an Austrian self-taught landscape painter. Born the son of a cabinetmaker, originally destined by his parents to become a priest, Rieger entered a Catholic seminary, but left theological studies prematurely and entered the financial service. It was not until the 1920s that he began painting landscapes as a self-taught artist. He presented his works with views of Vienna and Viennese suburbs in Viennese art salons. Despite his lack of academic training, he was recognized by critics as a professional artist. In 1938 he became a member of the Hagenbund. The impressionist painter is always compared with Carl Moll. He is characterized by soft brushstrokes that skillfully set the light. Works can be found in the collection of the Belvedere, among others.
