The painter Karl Fahringer was a personality full of contradictions: a rebellious student who posed nude in a sculpture niche at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, then a restless world traveler, later a soldier in the First World War. As an artist, he became known for his depictions of animals, a hint of which can be seen in the skillful brushwork that brings the dog of Zum Bauernmarkt to life. It is the enigmatic contradictions between the painter and the painterly, industrious beauty of his work that make this painting special.
