Josef Winkler studied with Josef Dobrowsky and Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1940s. After a remarkable forty-year hiatus, during which he made a name for himself as an art dealer, he took up the brush again. This late work shows the characteristics of his mature oeuvre, with its muted color palette and brushwork that is somewhere between calligraphy and action painting.
