PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Elephant of Madura, 1931, parchment print numbered 3/4 Original etching on parchment; complete with its original wide margins. Presented under a marie-louise and with a modern large-moulded frame in Macassar ebony veneer. Signed JOUVE and numbered 3/4 Parchment, in pencil lower left under the engraved part. Sight leaf: 44 x 55 cm Bowl: 41 x 50 cm With frame: 68 x 79 cm Important note We would like to thank the artist's successor for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. Historical background: This etching saw the light of day as part of a series of ten etchings designed, along with a frontispiece, for the album titled Paul Jouve published by Éditions Apollo for Galerie Weill in 1931. For these Éléphant de Madura, Jouve produced four parchment proofs alongside the Japon prints. These deluxe copies were printed on skin, a delicate and very expensive medium, but their quality and fidelity of rendering were far superior to those on paper, even of the highest quality.
