PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Chimpanzee, circa 1936 Mixed media (Indian ink and oil) on mounted paper. Presented under a marie-louise and with a modern frame in stained wood veneer. Signed JOUVE in red lower left, with Belgian customs stamps on the back (affixed following his participation in an exhibition in Antwerp). Work alone: 69.6 x 54.3 cm With frame: 83.5 x 68 cm Important note We would like to thank the artist's successor for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. History: In 1950, for one of the illustrations in André Demaison's book - La comédie des animaux qu'on dit sauvages - published by Rombaldi in 1950, Paul Jouve chose this painting for an engraving. The painting was subsequently exhibited twice, in Antwerp in 1954 and in Paris in 1955, but has not reappeared on the art market since.
