Dress of a statue of Jesus of a Sevillian Brotherhood, Spanish work, 18th century. Tunic in plum silk velvet heavily embroidered on the hem, collar and bottom sleeves of a sumptuous embroidery of floral scrolls in cannetille, thread, curly, gold and glass chips (tears in the velvet background, superb condition of the embroidery) Probable provenance: Basilica del Gran Poder in Seville. Carried by a life-size sculpture of Christ carved by one of the masters of the Spanish Baroque in 1620, these dressed statues are taken out during the Holy Week of Seville (7 days dedicated to the Passion of Christ) during which more than 60 brotherhoods participate in the procession of the Penitents since the 17th century.
