Jean-Baptiste Olive (1848-1936) "The shore" Oil on wood, signed lower left Period XXth century Very slight scratch Dimensions at sight: H: 32; L: 40 cm Jean-Baptiste Olive was a French painter born on July 30, 1848 in Marseille and died on May 13, 1936 in Paris. He was known for his paintings of seascapes and landscapes, especially of Provence and the French Riviera. He studied at the Marseille School of Fine Arts under Joanny Rave and began exhibiting at the 1874 Salon. He was also a member of the Artistes Français and the Salon de Lyon. Olive was awarded the Léon Bonnat prize in 1930. Although he is relatively unknown outside of France, Olive is considered one of the most emblematic painters of Provence and the French marine art movement.
