Henry OSSAWA TANNER (1859-1937) Pastel on paper, monogrammed and dated May 1906 lower right. Trace of dedication on the lower left Dimensions at sight: H: 15,5; W: 24,5 cm Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 - May 24, 1937) was an African-American painter who was the first African-American painter to achieve international fame. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1891, he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and gained fame in French art circles. Tanner painted landscapes and religious scenes, and his painting "Daniel in the Lion's Den" was accepted into the Paris Salon in 1896. He also painted portraits and genre scenes. Tanner was influenced by the painters of the Barbizon School and the painters of the Italian Renaissance. He lived in France, spending time in Paris and on a farm in Normandy. Tanner died in Paris in 1937.
