ABRANTES, Laure Junot, Duchesse d' (1785-1838). Mémoires de Mme la duchesse d'Abrantès ou Souvenirs historiques sur Napoléon, la Révolution, le Directoire, le Consulat, l'Empire et la Restauration. Paris, Ladvocat, then Mame-Delaunay, then Mame. 1831-1835. 18 volumes in-8, 1/2 fawn calf, red and fawn morocco titles and tan morocco. Perfectly established bindings circa 1880. A fine copy, free of foxing, of the first edition of these "famous memoirs which owe much to Balzac [sic], and of which Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas made much of. The prestige of these memoirs, rich in curious anecdotes and piquant recollections, is clear to see. The success was considerable. However, this account by the Duchesse d'Abrantès, nicknamed by Théophile Gautier, not without reason, the Duchesse d'Abracadabrantès, should be used with caution" (Tulard, 5).
