Original drawing, signed "Goussier del. 1750" at the bottom. It is probably a preparatory drawing for a publication; the meridian of the globe bears the indications "Goussier delin. 1740 - Brunet sculpo.".
Louis-Jacques Goussier (1722-1799), draughtsman, engineer and encyclopedist, played a very important role in the Age of Enlightenment and especially in the edition of the famous Encyclopedia. Recruited by Jean le Rond d'Alembert in 1747, he was the author of about 900 plates included in the Encyclopedia, which brought him the nickname of "third author of the Encyclopedia" after Diderot and d'Alembert.
