Eighteenth century BINDING ATTRIBUTABLE TO LA FERTÉ. Red morocco, gilt decoration, triple fillet in frame, arms in the center of the boards, long spine with vertical titling decorated with nice vegetable irons, gilt edges.
PROVENANCE: probably Louis-César de La Baume Le Blanc, duc de La Vallière (1708-1780; his sale, Paris, 1783, I, n° 1126)
Very faint stain on a few leaves, small stain on F8v. Slight marks on the binding
The Rule was first printed in 1580 at the Jesuit College in Rome. In 1582, it went through three editions at the same address, each with a different collation: 230, 89 and 72 pages. The binding corresponds completely to the taste of the duke of La Vallière. He owned a copy of this edition, the only one Debure ever saw (cf. Bibliographie instructive, Paris, 1764, pp. 63-64) bound in red morocco.
