CHEST OF DRAWERS, STAMPED APRIL, FOR ÉTIENNE AVRIL (1748-1791), WITH SWEARING MARK, TRANSITION PERIOD in veneer of rosewood, sycamore, blackened wood, inlaid in leaves with Greek reserve fillets, attributes of war with on a shield, three crescent moons. It opens to four drawers, uprights with cut sides in slight projection decorated with simulated flutes, cambered feet with foliated sabots and scrolls, top of royal red marble of Belgium (Small accidents, damages and restorations of use) A Transition period commode by Etienne Avril, stamped 101 x 98 x 48 CM - 39,8 x 38,6 x 18,9 IN. - - Etienne Avril, nicknamed Avril l'Aîné, was received as master on November 23, 1774. He was established in the rue de Charenton and it is known that he received orders for the apartment of Queen Marie-Antoinette in the château de Saint-Cloud. Mahogany and satinwood dominate his production of furniture with rigorous and simple lines. The forms are clean, light, well proportioned and the bronzes, rare, discreetly underline the architecture of the furniture. Several of his works can be found in public collections, such as a small Louis XVI armoire in the Château de Fontainebleau or a Louis XVI commode in rosewood veneer in the Musée Marmottan. Note The presence of the crescent moons on the marquetry of the center allows us to consider that the sponsor is from the Middle East.
