CHRISTOFLE CUP, "LABOURING AND HARVESTING", 1879 silvered metal, gilt bronze and cherry red marble. The cup of baluster form on pedestal, surmounted by gadroons, decorated with two bands with scenes of ploughing or grape harvest, the flared neck with gadrooned base; the handles with head of Ceres in high relief in a cut out cartouche. Engraved with the inscriptions : CONCOURS RÉGIONAL AGRICOLE DE LIMOGES 1879/CULTURES FOURAGÈRES/BÉTAIL NOMBREUX/MINISTÈRE DE L'AGRICULTURE ET DU COMMERCE Numbered under the base: 1043839 Standing on a square pedestal, the edge chiseled with half flowers (Apparently unsigned) Christofle Silver plated cup "Ploughing and Harvesting", 1879 40,50 CM - 15,9 IN. - - We thank Christofle for their help. This model was originally created by Léon Mallet and Charles Henri Godin around 1874 and would have been exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. These cups were pieces created to reward agricultural competitions in the second half of the 19th century to encourage the development of agriculture. This example was probably offered for that purpose.
