After Gaetano MERCHI ( 1747-1823) Marie-Madeleine Guimard, dancer at the Opera Bust in terracotta, the bodice decorated with ivy leaves on a pedestal painted in imitation of marble, signature on the back "Merchi. F 1779", after the bust of the dancer made by Merchi in 1779 H. 70 cm (Some chips) Born in Brescia, Gaetano Merchi left Italy to settle in Paris in 1773 where he made several busts of dancers at the Opera. Marie-Madeleine Guimard (1743-1816) was one of the most famous dancers of her time. Her portrait by Fragonard (1732-1806) is kept in the Louvre. Two terracotta versions of this bust are in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
