Description
Spanish school; 17th-18th centuries. "Virgin Mary". Carved and polychromed wood. It presents faults in the polychromy and the loss of a hand. Measurements: 32 x 8 x 7 cm. Carving in gilded and polychrome wood representing the Virgin Mary full-length, standing on a sober pedestal. The Virgin adopts a theatrical posture, with one foot forward and one of her arms resting on her waist holding part of the mantle. The composition is closed and compact, following 16th-century Spanish models, but its baroque style is already evident in the wide, chiaroscuro folds and, above all, in the position of the right arm, which gently opens up the composition, breaking with the previous scheme. The Virgin wears a golden tunic, a colour that alludes to the divine Glory, generally related to Marian iconography.
