DANIEL (Gabriel). - 17 volumes in-4, 251 x 190. Marbled calf, gilded arms in the center of the boards, smooth spine decorated in the grotesque style, red edges (period binding). The most complete and sought-after edition of this ambitious history of France begun by Jesuit Father Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), revised and greatly enlarged by historian Henri Griffet (1698-1771), who is said to be the author of volumes 13, 14, 15 and 16. The illustrations include a frontispiece, 37 copper engravings in the text and 57 headbands, mainly depicting medals and coins from each reign, as well as 5 plates and 4 fold-out maps drawn by S. Robert and dated 1756 (Carte Générale des Etats de l'Europe. - Map of the Western Part of Germany. - Map of Italy. - Map of France). Rare copy in contemporary binding with the coat of arms of Martin du Bellay (1703-1775) bishop of Fréjus. The headband on page 457 in Volume III has been glued on, covering the original one, which seems to have been the wrong one. Worm damage to bindings, more extensive in volume 11, several headpieces missing. Smudging on the edge of the false title of volume 11, restoration to the upper corner of the Ddddiij leaf of volume XII. Provenance: Martin du Bellay, with his arms on the boards.
