Alongside Sarah Bernhardt, the Italian Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) was one of the most respected theater actresses of her time. Steichen printed this portrait in various techniques, for example also as a carbon and as a rubber print. This photogravure, made only one year after the photograph was taken, is in excellent condition and captivates with its seemingly "painterly" abstraction, whose translucent aesthetic also integrates the texture of the paper surface into the design.
