Dimensions: 101 x 201 cm A French Orientalist painter of the Ecole Moderne, also known as the Ecole d'Alger, born in Miliana and died in Oran, Augustin Ferrando studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Alger under Hypolite Dubois, a pupil of Ingres, before joining the Académie Druet. Encouraged by collector Rouby, composer Camille Saint-Saëns and Georges Rochegrosse, he perfected his skills at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and with Fernand Cormon, who gave him the job of Massier. While he befriended Derain, Matisse, Léger, Vlaminck and Utrillo, his main passion was the Fauve art of Cézanne and Gauguin, and it is his powerful style and colorful palette that make Ferrando the only Fauvist painter in Algeria. Albert Camus and Jean-Gabril Domergue were his most loyal friends.
