High relief in sculpted schist representing a "Crouching figure". Work of the Gandhara. Period: between the 1st and the 5th century. Brought back from Peshawar in 1966 with a copy of a letter written at the same time. (Crack at the back and slight chips). H.: +/-12cm.

A SCHIST FRIEZE DEPICTING A MEDITATING BUDDHA, GANDHARA, 2nd – 3rd CENTURY A SCHIST FRIEZE DEPICTING A MEDITATING BUDDHA, GANDHARA, 2nd – 3rd CENTURY Carved with Buddha seated in dhyanasana on a pedestal beneath a canopy of leafy branches from an ashoka tree, his hands resting in his laps in dhyanamudra, wearing a voluminous robe with elegantly carved folds, flanked by his attendants. His serene face surmounted by neatly secured hair over in a high chignon. With an associated stand. (2) Provenance: A private collection in Slovenia. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, nicks, encrustations, and signs of weathering and erosion. Weight: 3,250 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 14 cm, Length 19 cm (excl. stand)
