TIBET, RÉGION DU KHAM XVIIIe SIÈCLE

Iron beer pot with gold, silver and copper damascene decoration. The body, round in shape, rests on a high foot decorated with stylized lotus petals. The body is decorated in the center, on each side, with a medallion featuring a Chinese-style dragon, surrounded by a scroll of lotus populated by the Eight Buddhist Emblems. The brass spout represents a makara head while the "S" shaped handle represents a stylized dragon head. The high stopper, with a lotus bud finial. H. 38,5 cm PROVENANCE Collection A.D., Prix de Rome. NOTE This type of jug, for both domestic and ritual use, is inspired by the forms of the Silk Road pilgrims' flasks known as "moon flask". It also combines typically Chinese decorative motifs, such as the dragon medallion and lotus scrolls, with Tibetan-inspired motifs such as the makara-shaped spout. A similar piece in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (IM.22-1928). Another similar piece in the collections of the British Museum, London (1959,1216.3).
