Description

(Picardie) LEFÈVRE-PONTALIS (Eugène): L'architecture religieuse dans l'ancien diocèse de Soissons au XIe et au XIIe siècle. Paris, E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie, 1894-1896. 2 volumes of text bound in one volume, and one volume of atlas. 28 by 39.5 cm. (4)-III-(1)-237-(2) and (2)-228 pages and 104 plates, including 3 double plates for the atlas volume (complete: plates are numbered from I to XCIII, but includes bis, and different plates with the same number). Contemporary brown half-chagrin, 5-ribbed spine. Some superficial spotting to boards, otherwise good condition. Minor foxing in the atlas volume. Autograph signed letter from the author on the title page. First edition. "A pupil of the fathers of medieval archaeology at the Ecole des Chartes, Jules Quicherat (1814-1882) and above all Robert Lasteyrie (1849-1921), his scientific work is revealed in a rather classic way in his thesis L'architecture religieuse dans l'ancien diocèse de Soissons au XIe et au XIIe siècle. Published a few years later in two major award-winning volumes, this initial work remains a must-read for all those interested in religious architecture, both in terms of the sum of knowledge acquired and the accumulated related data, entirely characteristic of this great researcher's way of working." (F. Blary, Institut national d'histoire de l'art). In Volume 1, the author methodically outlines the general characteristics of the churches of the Ile-de-France region, built between 1000 and 1200. He then describes in detail fifteen 11th-century churches. The second volume describes 48 churches from the first half of the 12th century, and 38 from the second half. A very rich document, superbly illustrated.
