Leyden, Luchtmans, 1739. Two volumes. 20 by 24 cm. Portrait-XXV-(3)-502 ; (2)-503 (erroneously marked 501)-914-(34)-63-8 pages. 30 mostly folding engravings (XXIX and one bis), and 4 folding engravings for the last text. Complete. Contemporary full calf, 5-rib spine, red title-pieces. Headbands defective, rubbing and small epidermal marks on boards. Some light internal foxing. Old memberships crossed out on title page. Wormholes have been kind enough to remain in the margins, so there are no gaps. A pupil of Willem Jacob 's Gravesande, Musschenbroek contributed powerfully through his lessons, discoveries and works to the introduction of experimental philosophy and Newtonianism in Holland; he left important observations on electricity, magnetism, friction and cohesion of solids, capillarity; he took part in the Leyden bottle experiment and devised the pyrometer. The final section, written by his brother Jean, presents the various machines he built and marketed, and their applications, ending with an 8-page catalog with machine prices.
