Description

[1st Empire] A set of 12 receipts made on behalf of Empress Josephine, dated 1811. Each receipt mentions a payment made by M. Duval Vaucluse, on behalf of S M L'impératrice Joséphine. Three are addressed to specific individuals: Mr Tascher de la Pagerie, 15,000 francs, dated April 30, 1811. Is this Pierre Claude Tascher de la Pagerie, Comte Tascher de la Pagerie et de l'Empire? The Tascher de la Pagerie family was, it may be recalled, the family of Joséphine de Beauharnais. Another receipt, dated the same date, is for the payment of 42,000 francs to Mr. LEROY. Louis Hippolyte LeRoy, a leading Parisian fashion designer, was Joséphine's supplier and protégé from 1801 to 1814. In 1811, Napoleon divorced Josephine, but she continued to wear her title of Empress, which the Grand Intendant General agreed to mention on receipts. And she would dress at LeRoy until her death. A final receipt mentions GAZZANI, whose wife was a mistress of Napoleon, and a friend of Joséphine. 9 receipts do not mention the name of the creditor they are to pay. They may represent payments for the Empress's day-to-day expenses. Approx. 25 by 19 cm (2 receipts smaller). Very good condition, except for a small marginal tear on one receipt.
