Franz von Stuck, Dr. Luise Klinsmann (1896-1964) Oil on canvas. (Circa 1925). 60 x 50.3 cm. Signed lower right. Inscribed on the stretcher, on the back of the frame with faintly printed stamp "Dr. L. Klinsmann (...)". In o. artist's frame. Verso with the blue oval stamp of the Kunsttischlerei G. Oberndorfer, Munich. Depicted is Dr. Luise Klinsmann, who was committed to the Social Democrats since the post-war years. Framed in an oval cutout, she is rendered as a shoulder piece in front of a green curtain drapery. Stuck shows her in three-quarter profile to the left. Her posture is very upright and shows inner straightness. With a self-assured gaze, she examines her counterpart with her head slightly tilted back. Her brunette hair is slicked back and braided into a wreath. She wears a decollete peacock blue top. The jewelry consists of a pearl earring and a matching necklace. Luise Klinsmann, née Schmidt, received her doctorate in 1922 in Kiel with a thesis on the industrialization of her hometown of Lübeck. In 1929, she married Wilhelm Klinsmann, a student councilor, in her second marriage. In 1945 she became a member of the SPD and began her political career. She ran for the Bürgerschaft and the following year became the first woman elected to the Senate of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. From 1947 she was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament, and from 1950 to 1955 she held the office of second deputy mayor of Lübeck. Provenance: Private property, Southern Germany.
