Description

Occitan - Languedoc BOISSIER de SAUVAGES (Pierre-Augustin), abbot Languedocien-French dictionary, or choice of the most difficult Languedocian words to render into French. Nîmes, Gaude, 1756. In-8. Small paper loss at the foot of the title page, without affecting the text. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title page, small lack of headband at foot, cold fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. Languedocien is a dialect of Occitan spoken mainly in Languedoc and Guyenne; it has sometimes been called Languedocien-Guyennais. The author focuses on the Bas-Languedoc and Cévennes dialects, referred to here as languedocien. Although unanimously recognized as a reference, this dictionary is still being debated today, with some highlighting the important work accomplished to preserve idioms and expressions in Occitan, while others reproach the author for presenting Occitan only in the form of a patois aimed at correcting "gasconisms". First edition.
