Gilded copper alloy statue of Avalokiteshvara on a lotiform base, Tibet, 18th-19th century Depicted with eight arms, indicating the eight directions, and eleven heads, also signifying the eight directions as well as the three vertical divisions of top, middle and bottom. The heads are arranged in a pyramid in three rows, ten peaceful heads and one fierce, representing the angry form of Avalokiteshvara. The bodhisattva is fixed on a lotus base, crowned with heads arranged in five tiers, the top with a small head of Amitabha Buddha, above a wrathful head followed by nine heads with serene expressions, all above a slender body wearing ornate jewelry and loose robes with eight outstretched hands, the main hands held in prayer, the other hands carrying prayer beads, a kalasha, or in various mudras.
