MARDRUS (Jacques-Charles).

The Book of Kings. The advent of Solomon. Literal translation of the Semitic texts by M. le docteur J.-C. Mardrus. Lausanne, Gonin & Cie, 1930. In-4, ruby morocco, first board cut in two in the direction of the height by a broad mosaic band of red and black shagreen bordered by a listel of gilt box and three rectangular pieces of polished bone in relief distributed in a parallel way one above the other; small orange stripe at the top and bottom of the boards and passing over the spine, gilt fillet decoration, orange and gold glitter piece on the second board, title on the spine, mosaic lining of nubuck pieces of various colors, red nubuck endpapers, gilt and chased head, untrimmed, cover, red half-maroquin folder and slipcase (Castiglioni 2012) 21 woodcuts in colors by François-Louis Schmied after Gustave Miklos, including a frontispiece and 6 full-page figures, and several ornate lettering. Edition at 195 numbered copies, of which 20 are hors commerce. One of the 20 copies out of trade: this one contains a double suite on japon, in black and in colors, the decomposition of 4 woodcuts in 60 plates, as well as a beautiful original gouache used to illustrate the book. Interesting Art Deco style binding in morocco and shagreen with gilt and chased head, by Luigi Castiglioni. Label of the gallery-bookshop Fata Libelli.
