MAC ORLAN (Pierre).

The Song of the Crew. Paris, Les arts et le livre, 1926. In-4, green morocco, on a background evoking a light and dark green tartan passing over the spine, stands out in the center of the first plate a compass rose with brown and black needles, each of the cardinal points in a red square underlined by two palladium nets, same decoration on the second plate but muted, inner frame stamped with the same tartan decoration, lining and endpapers of brick cloth, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, dark gray paper folder, case (Pierre Legrain). 22 original etchings by Dignimont, watercolored with stencil. Edition at 321 copies, all on vellum of Rives. Precious copy of Pierre Legrain, bound for himself, who inserted in the copy a large original watercolor of Dignimont with this sending : To my good old Pierre Legrain alias : "Le Pel" sign of good and sincere friendship, Dignimont. Four letters from Dignimont to the Legrain couple are bound at the top, in a very friendly and free tone, each illustrated with several watercolor, pen and colored pencil drawings. Also bound are two greeting cards with engraving of Dignimont and dedication for 1927 and 1928. Attractive binding decorated with a compass rose, not mentioned in Pierre Legrain relieur, Répertoire descriptif et bibliographique de mille deux cent trente six reliures (Blaizot, 1965), which is understandable since the volume was kept by Legrain in his personal library. This binding can be compared to two other bindings reproduced in the Répertoire, one on Valéry's Rumbs (n°1073, reproduced pl. XXVII), the other on Bartlett's The Typographic treasures in Europe (n°49, reproduced pl. LIX). From the Alexandre Loewy library (1996, n°161).
