Description

FLAUBERT (Gustave).

Madame Bovary, provincial customs. Paris, Société du livre d'art, 1912. In-4, blue morocco, double gilt border decorated with gilt irons joined by fillets, spandrels at the central border, spine decorated, inner gilt border, lining and endpapers of blue moire, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, half blue morocco folder, case (H. Blanchetière). 52 color etchings by Henri Jourdain in the text, including one on the title. Edition of 150 copies, all on Arches vellum. Freckles, sometimes important. Attached, in a volume bound by E. Maylander, a model of the edition, mounted on a second proof dated 1911. It bears this printed justification: Unique copy composed by the illustrator Henri Jourdain, accompanied by this autograph note from Léopold Carteret: I established this set at the time of the succession of my friend Henri Jourdain of whom I was the publisher. L. Carteret April 1932. This model contains 98 original drawings by Henri Jourdain. These pen-and-ink drawings are mostly watercolored, some of them present two versions, in black and watercolored, and others give two watercolored versions of the same subject. The illustration of the volume includes 52 etchings, so this set of 98 original drawings reveals an unpublished part of the illustration planned by the artist. About fifty proofs, proofs for printing, black proofs with remarks have been bound in the suite. The proofs on paper of the edition are sometimes very faded.
