Description

SAMBUCUS (Johannes).

Emblemata, et aliquot nummi antiqui operis. Quarta editio. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1576. - JUNIUS (Hadrianus). Medici emblemata. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1575. Together 2 works in one volume in-16, orange morocco, triple gilt fillet, small inner lace, gilt edges (Gruel). Reunion of 2 nice books of emblems of the 16th century published in Antwerp by Plantin, bound in one volume by Gruel. Fourth Latin edition of the Emblemata by Johannes Sambucus (1531-1584), a Hungarian humanist who was historiographer to Emperors Maximilian II and Rudolf II (Landwehr, Low Countries, no. 593 - Praz, p. 487). It is decorated with a portrait of the author and 222 woodcut emblems after Pieter Huys, Lucas d'Heere and Pieter van der Borcht, and contains, at the end, a series of 90 numismatic figures preceded by a dedication to the collector Jean Grolier. The Medici emblemata by the Dutch physician Hadrianus Junius (1511-1575) is illustrated with 58 woodcut emblems after Geoffroy Ballain and Pieter Huys. (Landwehr, Low Countries, n°279. - Praz, p. 385.) These two books of emblems were printed for the first time in Antwerp in the office of Plantin, in 1564 for that of Sambucus, and in 1565 for that of Junius. They are sometimes found bound together, as is the case here. Spine faded.
