ROSINUS (Joannes).

Romanorum antiquitatum libri decem. Basel, Heirs of Henri Perna, 1583. In-folio, lemon morocco basane, framed with filets of roulettes, spandrels of foliage, large diamond-shaped cartouche drawn by foliage arranged around an oval medallion charged with a coat of arms, smooth spine decorated throughout with a decoration of filets and roulettes, traces of ties, gilt edges (Binding of the time). First edition of the first illustrated manual of Roman Antiquities. Illustrated in the text with 53 woodcuts representing ruins of Rome, medals, objects, costumes, etc., a double-page map of the Roman city and a double-page plan of a military camp. The ten books of Romanorum antiquitatum describe in detail the various aspects of daily life in ancient Rome, the political and religious organization, civil life, laws, military activities, customs and games, etc. Major work of Joannes Rosinus (1551-1626), German historian and antiquarian, it is considered the first modern manual of Roman antiquities. Rich and expensive binding decorated with small irons, with the arms of Baron Odet de Bretagne, Baron d'Avaugour, Count of Vertus and Goëllo, and Viscount of Saint-Nazaire. Bishop of Saintes from 1544 to 1548, gentleman of the chamber of King Charles IX in 1561, he died in 1598. Engraved armorial bookplate: Monsieur Saint de la Soudextrie Conseiller en la Cour des Monnoyes de Paris. A long handwritten note, dated 1850, about Odet d'Avaugour and his coat of arms is attached. The endpapers are missing. Some browning, worm holes in the corners of a few quires, wetness at the end of the volume. Restoration to the covers and corners.
