In-4, red morocco, double fillet, spine grotesquely decorated, edges gilt on marble (Binding of the period). Chadenat, n°1158. - Fumagalli, n°92 - Gay, n°2657. First edition in French, decorated with a frontispiece by Cochin after L. de Boullongne and 2 folding maps showing Eastern Ethiopia and Abyssinia. Translated by Abbot Joachim Legrand, secretary of the embassy in Lisbon, it contains, in addition to Father Lobo's account, numerous memoirs and letters from travelers on this land. The author, born in 1594 and died in 1678 in Lisbon, entered the Jesuits of Coimbra and embarked early for the East Indies. From 1625 to 1634, he lived in Abyssinia and brought back from his stay numerous observations on the manners and customs of its inhabitants, as well as a description of the Nile. Rare copy in contemporary morocco, the spine decorated with grotesque style. Engraved armorial bookplate of the Chevalier de Folard, and bookplate of Joseph Nouvellet, a bibliophile from Lyon whose library was dispersed in 1891. A crack in one of the maps, not missing. Slight uniform foxing. Spine faded, chip at tail, large dark stain on second board.
