Description

♦ ESOPE. Les Fables. Paris, en l'imprimerie de Denis Janot, 1542. In-8, red morocco, gilt framing on the boards formed by three double fillets, two of which intertwine in the middle of each side, punctuated at the corners with a small iron, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges on marble (Lortic). First edition of Gilles Corrozet's translation into French verse, dedicated to Henri II, then dauphin of France. (Mortimer, French books, n°4.) Title placed in an architectural frame. Delightful woodcut illustration including 100 small vignettes surrounded by large Renaissance style borders, with a line similar to those of the Hecatongraphy (1540). A fine copy in an impeccable binding by Lortic. From the library of Ambroise Firmin Didot (1867, n°635, and 1879, n°479). The last leaf, which contains on the verso the typographical mark, is a little soiled and presents some small tears, restored.
