CORROZET (Gilles)

In-8, red morocco, jansenist, interior lace, edges gilt on marble (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Rare and sought-after first edition of this historical guide to Paris and one of the first important books on the capital. The work follows La Fleur des Antiquitez de Paris, a small booklet on the same subject that Gilles Corrozet (1510-1568) published in 1532 and that he says here he suppressed & put to naught, removing its errors & fables, to make room for this brand new and larger book. Thus, the text of 1532 has been completely recast and increased by events that have occurred since. In addition to details on the foundation of Paris, there is information on the ancient monuments of the capital and the mention of numerous historical events and curious anecdotes. The work ends with copious lists: names of bishops, magistrates, provosts, etc., of Paris, the prisons, the main houses and hotels of the great lords, and the names of streets, churches, chapels, bridges, gates and suburbs. Nice copy in morocco, of first printing with on the table leaf 197 the name of the street of poil de con (not yet corrected to rue du pélican).
