Rare first edition of the definitive text founding the idea of perpetual peace: this model for the Enlightenment was taken up by Rousseau and then Kant. The abbé de Saint-Pierre had previously published drafts, in small numbers. Ex-libris Léon Duris Du Fresne. Missing 5 plates out of 6 (I: the frontispiece and the author's portrait; II: 3 portraits and one plate; the portrait of Sully present). Binding worn, spines cracked, headbands trimmed, worm holes.
