Jean-André REICHE (1752-1817) after Mantelpiece clock called "au portefaix", formerly called "au nègre", in patinated and gilded bronze representing a young black man, bust and bare feet, wearing a hat, a gourd attached to his waist, gilded armbands adorning his upper arms, leaning on a sugar cane and carrying a cotton ball in which is inscribed the enamelled dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the quarters. It rests on an oval base decorated with two small baskets of fruit in which two birds are pecking and two palm branches between which a monkey is resting on a rope, resting on four small runners. Restorations, missing and worn to the gilding and patina, movement to be revised. First quarter of the 19th century H. 35 cm W. 26 cm D. 10,5 cm History and provenance : Estate of Madame la baronne J... and various, Le Havre, November 24, 1969, Lot No. 66, then by descent. This very famous clock model was made after a drawing by Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817), deposited in January 1808 and kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inv.LD 4127).
