Description

SADE Donatien Alphonse François de (1740-1814).

L.A.S. to his children, Paris, August 18, 1792. 1 p. 1/2 small in-4. Address, red wax armorial seal. Highly interesting letter sent to his children emigrated to Germany: "You know that I blamed the party you took and that it is at the instigation of your mother's family that you adopted it; it was not convenient for you to embrace a cause which, if it succeeded, would have for goal only to re-establish in France parliaments which wanted to dishonor your father and ministers who had him locked up. I am telling you that I am doing my service in my section, that circumstances may place us opposite each other and that it is not appropriate for you to arm yourself against your father. There is more, a decree of the National Assembly makes parents responsible for the conduct of their children and places them under the sword of the law if they do not return immediately, I ask you if you should remain any longer in a situation which holds the iron raised on the bosom of those whose life you have received. A last motive will finish to determine you you served a traitor a villain who in the day of the 10th forever famous in the history betrayed at the same time and the people on which he made fire, and the friends who had gone near him to defend him and to whom he had just sworn to die at their head; there are only fools who can longer serve the cause of such a deceiver. In a word, my children, I order you to return at once and threaten you with my hatred and my curse if you delay one day in obeying me; I embrace you if you obey me [...]".
