Description

[SAINTE-HÉLÈNE]. MONTCHENU, Claude Marin Henri de (1757-1831). N.A. (s.l. [Sainte-Hélène]) Saturday, October 30, 1816. 1 p. small in-4. He announces "An Englishman named Colonel, had the following conversation with one of his friends on his way back to England, arriving from St. Helena, where he had seen B. a lot and talked with him. B. complained that no American ship was allowed to touch St. Helena that they had limited the number of fishermen around the island. These precautions give him a bad temper, he is at loggerheads with Sir Hudson Lowe, governor, who has broken off almost all communication, even with the people in his suite [...] Permission from the governor is needed to enter B's little enclosure, as well as for one of his suite to come to the city. The cruising buildings, sentries, pickets and patrols are so active that it is doubtful that a rat could escape from the island. There was a rumor that B. had sent by the corvette "Termagant", a four-page admonition to all the powers of Europe against his detention, or that some restrictions were placed on it. When the colonel arrived from the island, (the date of his departure is July 30) he had had an interview on the 27th preceding with Bonaparte "who finds that his friends in your country serve him wonderfully". He believes to dream when he sees "that one supports his favorite legion known as of the honor; finally "he hopes to see again all his faithful companions "who seek to finish his work, using "everywhere the name of legitimate. The reflection of the author of the letter what will he say when he will know the choice of the president who was going to get the second volume of Vincennes and of the vice-president, faithful minister of Jerome, and who on 16 8bre 1814, creates gd officer of the Legion published on 15 July 1815 the constitutional act whose last article is the exclusion of your princes of the family of Bourbon but then named adviser of state (Council of which Mr. chateaubriand has just been charged) He knew to find the most worthy to replace his president. Our politicians are very worried about the end of such a tragedy. They even notice the ci-devant consul of Bonaparte in Trieste that at present is consul gal in London, signs consul of France as he signed in Trieste but never consul of S.M.T.C. apparently so that in all the cases his legislations are good." Family provenance, to the present owner by succession.
