[NAPOLÉON III] EUGÉNIE de Montijo. (1826-1920) Impératrice des Français, épouse de Napoléon III.

L.A.S. to his dear Tristan [Baron Lambert]. (s.l.n.d. after 1879). 5 ½ pp. in-8 on mourning paper. Very beautiful letter from the Empress at the time she was mourning Zululand, asking the baron to keep his royalist feelings to himself "Someone told me recently that in a conversation he had had with you about your new political attitude, you had answered him that I had known and approved in advance of your approach to Monsieur le Comte de Chambord. I confess that this surprised me and I formally denied it. I was in Zululand when you made your trip to Frosdorff [...]. I had nothing to say about an accomplished fact; I only saw in you the child I had known for a long time without worrying about either blaming or approving your political conduct. I even wish that in the future, you never speak to me about it [...]". His commitment does not concern her and she prefers to keep her numerous memories (of Tristan as a child with the prince). About the last speech that her correspondent sent her "You must understand that I cannot even through the praises that are addressed to me not feel the attacks that are directed to the name that I carry. Stranger to all politics, I prefer not to know what is attached to it; also, I wish that you do not send me any more your speeches [...]".
