In 1945, he was asked to illustrate the humoristic newspaper "Le Moustique" of which he produced no less than 250 covers. It was at this time that he gave birth to Lucky Luke, an extremely popular series that he drew until his death, alone or in collaboration with various scriptwriters, including René Goscinny. He first called comics the "ninth art" in the newspaper Spirou, in 1965.
